Search “furniture upholstery service New York” from central Brooklyn, and the first seven Google Maps results clean or move couches.

None of the seven reupholsters anything. On September 24, 2026 I searched Google Maps for furniture upholstery the way a customer does, from a point in central Brooklyn and four points around it, north, south, east and west: 41 searches, 10 of them with enough upholstery listings to count. Then I followed a reupholstery order step by step through what those 191 listings and their websites let a customer do. 124 of the listings are workshops, 36 are couch cleaners, 9 take sofas apart, 22 are other trades. No business is named here.

One order, seven steps

A reupholstery order is slow and costs real money, so the customer looks harder at each step than someone booking a couch cleaning. The same seven steps, for workshops and for the cleaners that come up next to them. Tap a step to jump to it, tap a number for where it comes from.

  1. 1

    Search

The customer types furniture upholstery into Google Maps. Who comes up depends on the words and on where the phone is.

1. Who comes up

Across the 10 counted searches, first ten places each: 99 spots. Google treats upholstery as one word, and cleaning a couch shares it with rebuilding one.

Workshops Cleaners Sofa movers 9Other trades 4

The words decide more than the place. For “near me” most points get workshops. For “furniture upholstery service New York” from central Brooklyn, are cleaners or a sofa mover, and the first workshop is place 8. From the south point, for “near me” are couch cleaners.

3. The price nobody prints

Workshop sites with a price

Neither is a price for reupholstering anything: one is chair caning, one is fabric by the yard.

Cleaning sites with a price

Nothing typed here leaves this page. The line is a starting price, not a quote.

4. Call

Someone who opened a site calls the number on the site, not the one on the map. workshop sites and cleaning sites show the number from their own listing. On the 44 sites read again on September 25 and 28, 2026, every call button was compared with the digits printed on it: dial something else.

Button reads a 718 number, dials area code 064There is no 064 area code. The line reads right on every page and goes nowhere when tapped.
A listing with an Arkansas numberA Brooklyn cleaning listing gives a 501 number on Google. Its site shows a 929 number, and its call button dials a third one.
A listing with no phone number at allA Manhattan shop with a long history has no number on its Google listing, so Maps shows no Call button. Its new site has the number on every page.

5. Send the photos

A chair cannot be quoted without seeing it. On the 16 workshop and sofa mover sites read again on September 25 and 28, 2026:

take a photo in the form, or have a send-a-file button
tell the customer to send photos and give no place to attach them
7neither ask nor offer; photos go by email or text, if the customer thinks of it

The three that ask: one says to fill out the contact form including photos, one lists sharing photos as step two of its process, one answers the question of reupholstering an existing piece with send photos, on a site with no email address.

6

cleaning listings, one set of habits

Five couch cleaning sites across Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan share the same inbox pattern, the same quote form and the same price list layout. A sixth listing, with no site, uses the phone number printed on one of them. Between the six listings: 1,870 reviews.

2

listings at one New Jersey address

A large workshop and a second upholstery listing with one review share a street address. The phone numbers differ.

2

upholstery listings at one Brooklyn address

Two workshop listings sit at the same address and floor, each with its own phone number and its own site.

4

listings, one name, one site

One workshop in Brooklyn appears as four listings with the same name and the same website.

1

national network with a Brooklyn listing

A furniture repair network that says it works nationwide runs one site under four names, lists a Brooklyn address, and advertises field technician jobs at $1,500 to $3,000 a week.

Walk your own order, from a phone

  1. Search furniture upholstery New York, then reupholstery near me, from your own street. Count the cleaners above you.
  2. Tap Website on your own listing and look at the bar above the page: a padlock, or a warning.
  3. Look for a number a sofa owner could plan with. A starting price, or at least what the price depends on.
  4. Tap the call button on your site and read the digits the dialer shows before it rings.
  5. Send yourself a photo through your own form and see if it arrives.

Each takes under a minute. Most of what this page found would have shown up on one of them.

How New York differs from the other reports

In the earlier reports other trades slipped into the searches now and then, a deck builder here, a landscaper there. Here the word itself is shared. Google files steam cleaning and reupholstery under the same upholstery, and which one a customer gets depends less on where they stand than on whether they type near me or New York.

Prices split the same way. In the Tampa dumpster report 27 of 63 sites print a price, in Seattle 6 of 72 concrete sites print one per square foot. Here half the cleaning sites print a couch price and the workshops, whose jobs cost many times more, print none.

Dead links are not new. Seattle had its share, and in Tampa half the spots went to listings with three reviews or fewer. What is new is where some of the dead links now go: to a casino ranking, a betting page and a printing store, on listings that still carry an upholstery name.

And Saturday. The cleaners in this report all open on Saturday. 41 workshop listings do not, in a city where the weekend is when most people look at fabric.

How this was checked

Searches: 41 Google Maps searches on September 24, 2026 from a point in central Brooklyn and four points around it, north, south, east and west. The phrasings are the ones a customer uses: furniture upholstery service near me, in New York, best, prices, cheap, reviews, top rated and local. 10 came back with enough upholstery listings to count, and those are the ones this page counts.

Listings: name, category, phone number, opening hours, review count and website field were read from each of the 191 Google listings on the same day, and each was put in one group by what it does.

Websites: every website field was followed. 121 pages answered and were read, the home page and up to six inner pages each. Nothing behind a login was opened. On September 25 and 28, 2026, 44 sites were read again for certificates, call links, email links, forms and photo buttons, and the fresher reading wins. of them opened behind a browser warning that day.

Limits: one day, five points, ten counted searches. A workshop that is not here may simply not have come up. Most certificates were read only once.

  • Google Maps results. 41 searches on September 24, 2026 from a point in central Brooklyn and four points around it, north, south, east and west, in the phrasings a customer uses. 10 of them came back with enough upholstery listings to count, and this page counts only those.
  • Google business listings. Name, category, phone number, opening hours, review count and the website field of all 191 listings, read on September 24, 2026.
  • Business websites. Every website field was followed on September 24, 2026: 121 pages answered, home page plus up to six inner pages each. On September 25 and 28, 2026, 44 of the sites were read again for certificates, call links, email links, forms and photo buttons, and the fresher reading wins.
  • What each listing does. Each listing is put in one group by its Google category and the words on its own site: a workshop reupholsters or restores furniture, a cleaner steam cleans couches, rugs and mattresses, a sofa mover takes sofas apart to get them through doors, and other trades are leather repair, car upholstery, window treatments, furniture and fabric stores.
  • Printed prices. Prices read in context on the sites that print them, on September 24, 2026, and checked by hand. Prices of products in a template shop, budget menus and prices from stories do not count.
  • Written promises. What each site says about how fast it answers a form or a message, read on September 24, 2026 and September 25 and 28, 2026. Only sites that put it in writing.
  • Area codes. As assigned in the North American numbering plan: 212, 646, 718, 347, 917 and 929 are New York City, 516 Nassau County, 201 Hudson County in New Jersey, 501 central Arkansas, 786 Miami, 920 northeast Wisconsin, 713 Houston. Area code 064 does not exist.
  • What this check cannot see. Calls, jobs won, ad spend, and the quality of anyone's upholstery or cleaning. This page is about Google listings and websites only.
