Leaving your website company: what you keep

Most companies that build and host a small company's website keep the site itself when you leave. What you can usually take is the domain, your text and photos, and sometimes the files. Notice runs from none to 30 days, and some contracts still charge for the months that are left. Below is what eight of them say in their own terms and help pages, checked on September 24, 2026.

Moving without losing calls

  1. Find your end date and the notice rule.

A notice that misses the window can cost a month, or a year.

  2. Get the domain answered in writing.

Who is the registered owner, and how it moves. Everything else can be rebuilt; the domain can't.

  3. Put your own phone number back.

If the number on your site or Google listing is a tracking number from the company, replace it before anything else.

  4. Save what's yours while you can log in.

    Text, photos and form submissions.

  5. Build the new site on a preview address.

Check it on a phone before anything switches.

  6. Point the domain to the new site.

Then update the website link on your Google listing.

  7. Give notice the way the contract asks.

By phone, email or letter, and keep the confirmation.

Want the move done for you?

Send me your site and the company it's with. I'll write back what the new site would take and what it costs, before you give notice to anyone.
