Leaving Wix: what moves and what can't

A Wix site can't be moved to another host: Wix's help center says it has to run on Wix's servers because of how the platform is built. The content you made belongs to you, and a domain bought from Wix can be transferred away; once it moves, the Wix site is disconnected from it. A domain registered, transferred or updated in the last 60 days can't move yet. If your business email runs on that domain, its settings have to be added again after the transfer.

What's different about Wix

Wix is the only builder in this guide. No company is holding your site, but the site is tied to the platform the same way, so leaving is a rebuild. The domain is the part you take, and the order of the steps is what keeps the site from going dark.

Before you give notice

  1. Don't cancel the Wix plan first. Build the new site, move the domain, then cancel.
  2. Check the 60-day lock: if you changed the domain's contact details recently, wait it out.
  3. Write down your email settings before the transfer.
  4. Download your images and copy your text.

What to write down before the transfer

Three things to have on paper before you touch the domain:

1) Your email settings (MX records) from Wix's DNS settings, if your business email runs on the domain.
2) When the domain's contact details last changed. A change in the last 60 days blocks the transfer.
3) Who owns the payment method for the domain. Only the site owner, or a co-owner who holds that payment method, can move it.

How Wix compares

No contract and no company holding the site, unlike the other seven. The site stays on the platform anyway, as at most of them. The domain is yours to move, with a 60-day lock that none of the other companies' pages mention.
