Leaving 180 Sites early: the fee and your files

Every 180 Sites package runs on a 24-month payment plan; their starter plan is $195 a month. Leave before the 24 months are up and you owe 50% of the remaining balance, and the website is terminated. If you want to take the site with you, you pay the remaining balance in full, and they package the files and transfer them. Once all 24 months are paid, the site is yours to host anywhere, or you can stay on their $150 a month maintenance.

What's different about 180 Sites

On the $195 starter plan, 12 months in, 12 payments are left: $2,340. Leaving costs $1,170 and the site goes dark; keeping it costs the full $2,340. 180 Sites is also the only company here where you end up with a working site you can host anywhere, because it's WordPress, but only once the 24 months are paid.

Before you give notice

  1. Count the payments left and run the math above for your plan.
  2. If the site works for you, compare the payoff with the price of a new one; paying it off gets you the files.
  3. If you leave without paying it off, save your text and photos first, because the site is terminated.
  4. Check that the domain is registered in your name.

To: 180 Sites supportSubject: Early cancellation and payoff for [business name]

Hello,

I'm on the [plan] plan and have [number] payments left. Please confirm in writing:
1) the early cancellation fee, 50% of my remaining balance;
2) the full payoff amount, and what it includes for transferring my WordPress site files;
3) who is listed as the registrant of my domain, [yourdomain.com].

Thank you,

How 180 Sites compares

Term: 24 months, the longest of the eight; Scorpion and Hibu's design term run 12. Leaving early: half the remaining balance; only Townsquare, where the rest of the initial term stays due, asks for more. The site: the only one of the eight you can take as a working site, once it's paid off.
