Leaving Scorpion: what you own and what you rebuild

By Scorpion's own answer, you own the website after the initial term of your agreement, which is typically 12 months, and the domains, content and images are yours. When you leave, they hand over the site's static files, design assets and content, and another company rebuilds it on a system like WordPress. Accounts such as Google Analytics, Local Services Ads and social media go back to you. The Google ads campaigns they ran for you don't.

What's different about Scorpion

Scorpion hands over more than most companies here: files, design assets and your accounts. What stays behind is the running site, because it lives on their own system, and the ad campaigns. So the move is a rebuild that starts from your own material, not from a blank page.

Before you give notice

  1. Find the end date of your initial term. Leaving before it is a different conversation.
  2. Ask in writing for the static files, design assets and content, and check what arrived before the old site goes down.
  3. Make sure you're the owner, not just a user, of Google Analytics, Local Services Ads and your social accounts.
  4. Plan any ads from scratch, since the old campaigns stay with Scorpion.

What to send Scorpion

Send it to your account manager before the initial term ends, so the handover is on record.

To: Your Scorpion account managerSubject: Handover of website files and accounts for [business name]

Hello,

My initial term ends on [date]. Please send me the site's static files, design assets and content, as your FAQ describes.

Please also confirm that I'm listed as the owner of our Google Analytics, Local Services Ads and social media accounts, and tell me when ownership will be transferred to me.

Thank you,
[your name], [business name]

How Scorpion compares

Term: typically 12 months, like Hibu's design term; 180 Sites runs 24. What you take: files, design assets and accounts, more than Townsquare's content on request or Wix's content alone; only 180 Sites hands over a working site, and only after 24 months. The domain: yours, as at Topline Pro and Rebolt.

Have the move done

Moving off Scorpion? Send me your site. I'll write back what the rebuild would take and what it costs, before you give notice.
